Writing Music as a Band

When writing music as a band we did not have the best framework to include everyone in the songwriting process as the guitarist and the main vocalist dictated the main structure of the song, the vocalist specialises in operatic vocal styles meaning that we had to adapt to this which became difficult at times as the pitch and duration of notes were not always consistent. The guitars were not evenly sharing the workload of the track as one guitarist took a great deal of the song's sonic space and meant that if another guitar was added it would sound too much and be uncomfortable to listen to, as a result of this the main guitar sound on the track felt rushed and unpredictable from a listeners perspective. The bassist played key parts in most of the songs however it could often be drowned out by the guitarist due to uneven management of levels and is only heard properly during a bass solo later in one of the songs. The drums followed a simplistic 4/4 pattern and allowed everyone to stay in time for the most part, however wasn't of noticeable influence and felt restricted, next time it would be a good idea to allow the drummer to create the structure of the track without being restricted by other instruments and then can be adjusted later as the song develops.
